SmartTrips™ is a public program designed to reduce automobile dependency and promote the use of alternative transportation in Northern Colorado.

By encouraging Northern Colorado residents to leave their cars at home at least one day a week, the SmartTrips™ program will help preserve air quality, decrease traffic congestion, conserve fuel and promote better health.

Why Should I Reduce Car Trips?

Do you sometimes see a "brown cloud" over Northern Colorado cities? Do you get frustrated when you can't find a parking spot or get stuck in heavy traffic? Do you wonder, "Where do all these people come from?" Each of us is part of the problem, and we must take individual responsibility—before pollution, traffic congestion and parking get worse.

What are My Transportation Choices?

There's more than one way to get where you're going. When you make a conscious effort to reduce your auto trips, you'll be amazed at your options! You can walk, ride your bike, skate, take a bus, carpool, van pool, or skip trips altogether by combining your errands, teleworking or working four 10-hour days, when possible. Of course, it depends on your lifestyle, work requirements, distance from home, and a host of other variables. But if you're creative, and if you really want to do your part, it's easier than you think.

What's In It For Me?

Using alternative forms of transportation is easy, fun and good for you. Not only will you help preserve air quality and reduce traffic congestion, but you can get healthier in the bargain. And you'll save money, time and wear and tear on your vehicle. Moreover, letting somebody else do the driving gives you more time to relax, read, work, do crossword puzzles, you name it. Studies show that when you walk, ride your bike or skate, you tone your muscles, lower or control weight, keep cholesterol down and reduce the risk of heart disease. And don't forget… exercise helps reduce stress.
